Student Server Accounts
We are pleased to annnounce that CITS is now hosting student storage folders on their servers.
Storage folders are a privilege, not a right, and are for temporary file storage of student homework files.
Folders and accounts will be active for the year and will be taken down the second week after graduation. During the first week of September, students who are actively enrolled in classes that use the CVPA Media Labs will once again have server space.
All students who use the server must agree to the terms of use:
By clicking on the I AGREE TO THE TERMS OF USE link (below), I agree that I will not load any of the following into my storage folder: fonts
programs
mp3 and mp4 collections
scripts harmful to computers and servers
files in which I do not have license/copyright
I agree that I will not share my password, account and storage folder with anyone and that if I violate the TERMS OF USE agreement, my account will be deleted and I shall not be allowed to use the server. Click on the I AGREE link below.
DIRECTIONS:
No matter if you use your Mac (as of right now we have no reliable PC instructions but expect them soon) to connect to your storage folder from the CVPA Media Lab, your laptop or home computer, you need an up-to-date LogOn password that follows CITS password protocol. So, your first step is to ensure that your password is younger than six months (you will need to change it every six months) and long enough/in the format CITS requires.
Until you have an up-to-date password, you will not be able to log on and access your storage folder.
Below are links from the CITS student portal http://www.umassd.edu/cits/ letting you know what you need to do to set up or change your password.
Step one: setting and or changing your LogOn password (used for your email as well): visit the below links:
http://www.umassd.edu/cits/passwords/welcome.cfm
from this page, click on the link concerning passwords: http://www.umassd.edu/cits/passwords/passwords.cfm
After you set or reset your password, wait about five minutes. Then proceed to step two:
Step two: connecting to your folder from the CVPA Media Labs.
- We have already plugged in the address of the CITS server on all the Macs in the CVPA Media Labs.
- Simply tap once on the macintosh computer desktop to activate.
- Next type in the "apple-command AND K" keys.
- Or pull down the GO menu from the top pull down menu and select CONNECT TO SERVER.
- Select cifs://netwin.umassd.edu/CVPA-Design-Students/ Take care, there are a few choices!
- Click CONNECT
- Enter the user name and password you use for email.
- Click CONNECT
- Your storage folder should be on the Macintosh desktop.
- You are allowed one gig for storage space
- Remember to drag your folder to the trash when you are done so that another will not have access to your folder
Step three: connecting to your storage folder from your laptop or home computer (needs wireless and VPN or it will not work) WARNING: VPN will not work in the dorms. You can only connect using FTP in the dorms. Scroll down to bottom of this page for FTP instructions.
Before you can connect to the CITS server and access your storage folder from your home computer or laptop, you must set up VPN. So, your laptop or home computer must be capable of wireless internet connection.
To set up VPN, you need to get a special VPN password. This password is to set up the VPN connection only. You will only use this special password once when you set up VPN.
When connecting to the server, even though you used VPN (vs, DHCP) to connect to the internet, you will still use your email account name and password to access the server. Thus, you will need to use the Apple menu and pull down GO then CONNECT TO SERVER (or type Apple/Command plus K) and type in cifs://netwin.umassd.edu/CVPA-Design-Students/
Step-by-step directions on how to set up VPN are here: http://www.umassd.edu/cits/wireless/welcome.cfm
From the above page, click on the what is VPN, establish your password, and set up VPN links.
Be sure that you check "Show VPN in menu bar" so that you can pull down the VPN connection whenever you want to connect your laptop or wireless computer to the CITS server.
When you want to connect to the CITS server via VPN, use the VPN in your menu bar to connect, then simply type in your user name and password. Disconnect the VPN connection when done.
FTP
Students who live in the dorms may now connect via FTP. Below are the settings, with the username of jmiller for example.

Using any FTP program the settings for FTP are:
Hostname: netwin.umassd.edu
Username: UMDAR\username (the name you use for email)
Connect using: FTP
Password: ************ (must be up-to-date password or this will not work - see above for password info)
Initial Folder: CVPA-Design-Students/username (the name you use for email
For Mac users, visit this site for a free FTP program: http://cyberduck.ch/
